Training workshop on “Best Practices in Sea Cucumber Seed Production and Seaweed Tubular Culture” in Zanzibar

Since May 2020, COFREPECHE has been providing constant support to the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) through different activities financed by the French Development Agency (AFD) in the framework of the technical assistance project for the implementation of the IORA Blue Economy Work plan on Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Environment.

In this context, COFREPECHE co-organised together with the IORA and the Government of Tanzania a 5 day training workshop on “Best Practices in Sea Cucumber Seed Production and Seaweed Tubular Culture” in Zanzibar from 7-11 November 2022 for the participants from all IORA Member States. The main objective was to demonstrate the seeding of sea cucumber and seaweed tube culture methods and transfer this knowledge and techniques to the participants. The training workshop also covered the areas of hatchery and grow-out, biosecurity and good fish health management practices for successful and sustainable aquaculture. The training was illustrated by field visits and technical presentations of the stages of operation, economic approaches and production figures. The results from the two pilot projects realised in Mozambique and in Zanzibar in April and May 2022 were presented together with the videos realised in this context on the preparation of tubular net and their installation in deep sea and the reproduction of sea cucumber in hatchery. More than 50 participants from the 23 IORA Member States attended the training which was very successful.
