Start of ROP-BFT program training

Since 2010, the MRAG–COFREPECHE group has been managing the ICCAT Regional Observer Programme for Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (ROP–BFT). In this context, COFREPECHE is responsible for recruiting and training observers, as well as deploying them on vessels, fattening farms, and traps listed on the ICCAT register, under the supervision of the ICCAT Secretariat. Since the beginning of the programme, more than 1,000 observers have been trained.

The COFREPECHE ROP–BFT team has just concluded its first training session in Naples this Friday, marking an important milestone in the organisation of the campaign. The team is now turning its attention to upcoming trainings, including one scheduled to begin on May 5 in Tunisia.

During this training session in Naples, the participation of representatives from MiPAAF – the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies responsible for the bluefin tuna sector – should be noted.

This significant moment highlights the continuity of a long-standing commitment to monitoring fishing operations, particularly during the bluefin tuna season, which runs from May 19 to July 1. Such monitoring has greatly contributed to the sustainable management of the bluefin tuna stock in the region and its recovery. In addition, this year is also marked by an increase in the fishing quota, rising from 40,570 tonnes in 2025 to 48,503 tonnes in 2026.
